Switzerland

Switzerland recorded 230 road fatalities in 2017, representing a 6.5% increase compared to 2016. However, in 2016, the number of road deaths had reached a record low with 216 road deaths, a 14.6% decline on 2015. The increase recorded in 2017 was primarily due to an increase in crashes involving two-wheeled vehicles. Switzerland’s current national road safety strategy “Via Sicura” was adopted in June 2012 by the Federal Council. An evaluation of “Via Sicura” completed in 2017 concluded that four measures in particular contributed towards a strong decrease in the number of road deaths and serious injuries: the ban on alcohol for new and professional drivers; the compulsory use of daytime running lights; legislation governing extreme speeding offenders and certain infrastructure measures.
