United States
The number of fatalities in the United States of America decreased slightly in 2017, after an increase of 14% between 2014 and 2016. The increase affected all road users. Although the number of miles driven increased between 2014 and 2016, the target of 1.02 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles was not achieved. The United States has made progress over a longer term. However, in the years 2015 and 2016 fatality increases were coupled with significant economic growth, which followed substantial fatality declines during the economic downturn in 2008-10.
