Statistics

In 1999, the United Nations continued its international statistics work programme. In March, the Statistical Commission, the 24-member body that guided UN statistical activities, adopted a classification of expenditure according to purpose and revised recommendations for a vital statistics system. It also adopted practical guidelines for good practices in technical cooperation in statistics and decided to discontinue the Task Force on Environment Statistics. Progress was made in developing an updating mechanism for the 1993 System of National Accounts and on a proposed manual on statistics in international trade in services. The Intersecretariat Working Group on Price Statistics, responsible for the preparation of price index manuals, held its first meeting in February 1999.
