The IRTAD Road Safety Annual Report 2018 provides an overview of road safety performance for 32 countries. The report outlines the most recent road safety developments across IRTAD countries and comparative data for the main road safety indicators. It also offers detailed analysis by road user, age group and type of road. It describes the crash data collection process in IRTAD countries, the road safety strategies and targets in place and information on recent trends in speeding, drink-driving and other aspects of road user behaviour.

Japan recorded 4431 road fatalities in 2017, representing a 5.7% decrease when compared to 2016. In 2017 Japan reached the lowest level of road mortality since systematic record began. A key priority in Japan is to provide a safer road transport system for senior citizens who represent more than half of total road deaths. The 10th Traffic Safety Programme was launched in March 2016 and covers the period 2016-20. Improving the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, including among the senior population, is an important focus on the Programme.
