Le cotonnier est un arbuste pérenne des pays chauds exploité comme une plante annuelle principalement entre 37°N et 32°S. Environ 90% de la production mondiale de coton se situe dans l’hémisphère nord. Lorsque le coton est planté dans l’hémisphère nord, il est récolté dans l’hémisphère Sud.
