The rate of growth of the Ecuadorian economy has been declining for some years and recent changes in the level of economic activity have merely served to accentuate that trend. While the average annual rate of increase of the gross domestic product was 5.4 per cent in the first half of the fifties, it dropped to 4.5 per cent in the second half and averaged only 4 per cent over the period 1960-66. In addition, the annual rate of population growth is one of the highest in the region, having attained nearly 3.4 per cent in recent years.
