Reduction of military budgets and use of funds thus saved for development aid

During recent decades, the reduction of military budgets as a method of achieving arms limitation through economic measures has been repeatedly proposed in the General Assembly. On several occasions, attempts have been made also to establish a link between disarmament measures and development aid, based on the presumption that resources released through the limitation of military expenditures could be re-allocated to economic and social development purposes.
