The idea of nuclear-weapon-free zones emerged in international relations as a means of ensuring the complete absence of nuclear weapons from various areas of the world, as well as preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Several factors played an important role in the implementation of the concept, such as the perception of their security by individual States, conditions in a particular region, concern about the threat of nuclear attack and the danger of becoming involved in nuclear war, as well as the desire to contribute to the achievement of general and complete disarmament, particularly nuclear disarmament. Several proposals have been advanced in connexion with nuclearweapon-free zones.
