This chapter provides an overview of developments in cross-border postsecondary education in Europe. The analytical focus is primarily on the European Union, with its current 15 member states (all OECD countries), but attention is also paid to developments in countries belonging to the European Free Trade Area and in the ten candidate member countries that have acceded to the Union in 2004 (of which four are presently OECD countries).

It shows how burgeoning demand for education in the Asia-Pacific region, in the context of the growing inter-country mobility of business, research, technology and education, is the chief driving force in the internationalisation of higher education in the region.
