The Transition Process

Seychelles achieved independence on 29 June 1976, with Sir James Mancham as the first President of the new republic and Mr René as Prime Minister. This coalition Government between the two long-time political rivals was short-lived. A coup d'état took place on 5 June 1977 while Sir James Mancham was in London to attend a Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
