Public sector reform has moved on apace since the first of the Commonwealth Public Service Country Profile Series was launched in 1995 when the principles of New Public Management (NPM) were in an early stage of adoption. Challenges

Public sector reform in Australia has been sustained for more than 20 years with constant extension and evolution, not only accepted, but often driven, by public sector managers. The incremental reforms have mostly been bipartisan; successive governments have built on the reforms introduced previously, resulting in a highly comprehensive, sustained package that has delivered substantial productivity gains and improvements in the effectiveness of government programmes.
