Many new technologies originate in the minds of academics and researchers, and academia and research institutes have made a great contribution to many ITU standards for information and communications technologies (ICTs). This long and profitable history of engagement with the world's universities and academic institutions allows academics to benefit from the experience of working in an international environment – in fact, the preeminent global standards body for ICTs. This enables networking with worldclass engineers and gaining a unique perspective on the development of ICTs.
