Testing

For the purposes of this book, the definitions of ‘test’ and testing’ given in ‘ISO/IEC 17000:2004 Conformity assessment - Vocabulary and general principles’, published jointly by ISO and IEC, are regarded as definitive. Testing is defined as a ‘technical operation that consists of determination of one or more characteristics of an object of conformity according to a procedure’. Typical tests involve measurement of dimensions and determination of chemical composition, microbiological purity and strength or other physical characteristics of materials or structures such as freedom from defects.
