Treaty on the non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons

Within 10 years after the end of the Second World War, nuclear technology had begun to spread to many parts of the world. Because, in various ways, a peaceful nuclear programme could provide the wherewithal for a military one, it was becoming evident that the accelerating spread of nuclear technology would bring with it the proliferation of nuclear-weapons capability unless measures were taken to preclude such a development.
